About the Event

Climate change is a serious challenge with real world economic, environmental, and security implications. The international community has set a goal of limiting global temperature increases to 2 degrees Celsius. Although the pledges being made by Governments in the run-up to the 21st Conference of the Parties meeting in Paris to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will begin to close the gap from current emission trends to achieve the 2 degree target, most analyses conclude that they are insufficient.

The gap needs to be filled by a mix of low-carbon energy sources and improvements in energy efficiency. No single technology can achieve the level of reductions that are required. Nuclear power has an important contribution to make in closing the emissions gap. To do this, nuclear power must be safe, secure, protected from misuse, and supported by the public. These are issues being addressed by the Global Nexus Initiative (GNI), which is working to develop innovative, realistic and actionable policy solutions at the intersection of climate, nuclear, and security issues.
